People who know me will know I have a soft spot for R&B. Proper R&B. Not that dance-pop crap. Whether we're talking Motown or New Jack Swing. Sam Cooke or Babyface. I've always thought of R&B as an extremely brilliant, talent-filled genre. The problem with having so much variation under one genre-umbrella though, is that people will associate R&B with Chris Brown & whatever other pop artists are having a crack at slowing things down a bit.
Anyways, now you know that I have a bit of a passion for R&B, you completely trust my opinion, right? Good on you stranger! Because I have a wonderful upcoming R&B artist for you now. He goes by the name of Rajiv, and he has kindly agreed to answer some questions for us, so that you can get to know him a little better! So, here we go!
Hey Rajiv! Could you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
I'm Rajiv, and I go by Rajiv Music across all my social networking sites. I am singer/songwriter from the borders of Essex and London, and I am currently working on completing my debut album, releasing early 2013, and on the gigging scene in London and across the country. Oh, and abroad too :)
Who are your biggest influences?
I do have a varied taste in music, which I think all influence the songs I write and sing in one way or another, even though it may not always be apparent. I've followed Usher's career since he began so he's a massive influence of mine. People like Stevie Wonder, Prince and Michael Jackson influence me as I have so much respect for the work they have done.
Opinions on the music industry at the moment?
I feel it's a very difficult time to get into the music industry right now, but that's only down to the talent that is out there and how much talent there is. I think it's easy to take for granted how reality TV shows make it look like the acts are fast-tracked into the industry, when in most cases, a lot of them have been working hard for years.
Favorite artist right now?
I grew up on Motown and R&B, and I am definitely a huge R&B fan. Right now I am constantly listening to an American artist called Tank. He is writing some great songs and in a style that I love. (Sam - Great choice!)
So, what can we expect from your highly anticipated debut album?
It will be an introduction to Rajiv, but I also hope that it takes the listener and fans on a little journey, as that is what has happened for me in creating this album. I hope that people will hear the transition in the songs, and be able to note where the changes begin in the songs.
And finally, where can your fans (or new fans) find you?
