If you're a fan of new music, you can be a bit like a kid in a candy shop on sites such as Soundcloud and Bandcamp. They're great, but unfortunately, there's so much choice, you don't tend to pay full attention to everyone you come across.
One lady we're very happy that we took the time to delve into is Vanessa Elisha. A sultry popstress who's quite hard to describe, but makes some of the slickest, most enjoyable tunes we've heard all year. She's been the soundtrack to many of our late nights recently, so we thought we'd pop the lovely lady a few questions...
Hey Vanessa, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade! Why don't you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
Hey guys, thanks for having me! In the shortest way possible, I’m Vanessa Elisha and I’m a singer/songwriter from Australia. I also love T.V. and I often believe that I am Liz Lemon from 30 Rock haha.
Can you describe your music to those unfamiliar?
It definitely has its roots in R&B, but with a twist. A lot of people are calling it “future R&B” it has influences that range from 90s R&B to current electronic music.
We adore your EP Midnight Swim, what was the creative process behind that like?
Thank you, I’m glad you are enjoying it! My creative process is pretty simple. I listen to a beat and if it inspires me, it takes me places. The music really leads me, I pull inspiration from how it makes me feel, who it makes me think of or what experiences it reminds me of. Water was a big influence for this EP, I’ve always had this weird fascination with it. I took that fascination and juxtaposed it with my personal relationships.
What's your favourite track off the EP?
I change all the time, but right now I'm dancing around to the Seywood remix of Ocean.
You've done some pretty sick collaborations over the past year too. Who would be your dream collab?
Noah 40 would be a dream for production. Childish Gambino as a collaboration would be insane, currently obsessing over his mixtape/ep, STN MTN/ Kauai.
What can we expect from a live show?
My first shows will definitely have a cool intimate vibe. We’re playing my songs, but with a difference, so there’s something new in every show.
We're a pop site, so, who is your fav pop act of all time?
Well there is only one King, so of course Michael Jackson. I’ve been singing along to his music, from before I could even speak (there is video evidence! haha). I can definitely say, I also mess with N’sync heavy ha ha.
And, what's one pop song you CANNOT get enough of right now?
Currently listening to Don’t by Ed Sheeran, what a writer and vocalist, his lyrics are amazing.
What can people expect from you over the next 12 months?
More music, collaborations, an EP or 2, videos and most likely a small US & Australian tour. I am going to squeeze everything I can into 2015!
Anything else you'd like to shout about?
Just a big thank you to Popshade for the interview. There’s a new EP in the works with some crazy production and songs I can’t wait to share with you all! Hope you love the music and if you do give me a shout on twitter/instagram/facebook! Vanessa xx
We'd like to thank Vanessa for taking the time to answer these questions!
The second we stumbled across Vanessa's Soundcloud, we fell in love, and haven't stopped going on about her since. As we're sure you'll agree, she's got a very distinct vocal, and paired with some of that super sexy production, she's definitely a star in the making.
Until that inevitable day when she's alongside Gambino and No. 1 on Hype Machine, get yourselves following her on those social media links mentioned up above. And, make her the soundtrack to your week, it may well be one of the best week's of your life.
P.S - We found this beautiful lady's Soundcloud after a recommendation from the folks at Bang Tidy Music!. Check them out for loads of tunes that are proper.... well, bang tidy!
