We have something special for you lucky Popshade readers today. As usual, we're about to introduce you to an incredible upcoming popstar, one who you'll have on repeat for the rest of the week, but this time, we're premiering her debut video!
Scarlette is a lady who defines everything we love about dance-pop. Huge choruses, beats that make us go a little bit crazy at Popshade HQ, and, this new video, well, it just makes us smile. This could be the new girl power anthem! Let's hand it over to the lady herself...
Hey Scarlette, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade. Why don't you start by telling us a bit about who you are and what you do?
I am self-invented “Alpha Female” artist.. about four years ago, Ifound myself in London writing about my life experiences in dungeon style basement studios with producers. I write about dark side of life.. I’m a very rebellious and fearless person. I totally speak my mind when I write lyrics and my music comes straight from the heart.
We bloody love your new tune and new video! It's making us have a little rave in Popshade HQ (which we don't think the neighbours are too happy about), but what does the song mean to you.
Thanks. This track happened one day when I was getting over a really bad heart break. It’s one of those moments when you just wake up hating the guy so much, and I was so mad this person totally “wasted my love”. So I wrote him an email with this track attached “You’re an asshole and best wishes when you hear my s*it in the radio!” I’m not a girl to be messed about with, so this chorus came to me so fast like he's f***ed up and that’s not okay! So many girls think there’s something wrong with her if a guy treats her badly and I want to change that. I want girls to love themselves like I do..
The video looks a proper fun one to shoot. Did you enjoy filming it?
It was crazy fun! This is actually my first proper music video and I planned how the "revenge plot" goes about a month before we shot it. The director had a huge crew running around in the set talking to me, so it was a bit weird at first. We had about hundred people and amazing dancers and there were clothes and glitter flying all over the place!
You've got quite the story to how you've got where you are today. Would you say that is reflected in your music?
Yeah, I’ve been around... All of my songs are statements of what I’ve seen or experienced during my journey. I never came from a stage school or upper class family. I had no support with my pop dream in Finland where I was born. So I just picked up a bag of cool clothes and came to London, and then flew to LA to promote my new EP. It’s tough when you don’t know anyone and you just have to survive and keep going. I knew I was an artist since I was 2. I’m a complete free spirit but also a very emotional person, and music is how I express myself. For example my song Alpha Female is totally what I have made of myself.. Fight or die.. and I know what I want!
Describe the new EP in three words.
It’s feisty, subversive and seductive.
You've already had comparisons to legends such as Gwen Stefani, but if you could work with any pop artist out there, who would it be?
Marina & The Diamonds...also I would die to work with Skrillex. He is an inspiration because his music is honest and raw like mine. I just love his “eat this” attitude.
Who's your favourite pop artist of all time?
Madonna! She has been my role model ever since I can remember. Is there anyone else who has influenced millions of girls to be sexually liberated!?
And, right now, what's the one pop tune you're absolutely loving?
Boom Clap by Charli XCX. Pop is coming back and I love it!
If people were to come to your live shows, what could they expect?
We are just now putting together my live sets. It will be a really energetic show with loads of live musicians.. I can’t stand still longer than five minutes with my ADHD and I love performing live so it will probably be me jumping up and down the stage smashing guitars or something crazy!
Do you prefer playing live, or recording in the studio?
When we recorded Merciless in Paris with my producer Fabian.. it was so amazing! Paris is so the city to get creative in! We literally figured out half of the chorus then and there in the studio 7am. Later I remember I went out to get lunch and as I walked back in with my coffee.. I was told the studio engineer is allergic to the SMELL of it.. (like whaa?) Then playing live is different because you finally get to be the show girl and perform all your hard work to people and that’s just super fun!
Finally, where can people find you?
I have a brand new website www.scarletteofficial.com also I’m on FB, Instagram and Twitter, which people can access straight from that site. Tour dates are coming soon for 2015!
We'd like to thank Scarlette for taking the time to answer these questions!
Well, there you have it.As we're sure you'll agree, Scarlette has got quite the story to how she got here, and she's come out well and truly on top. We feel honoured to premiere one of the funnest videos we've seen all year, and we hope you love it as much as we do.
Keep your eyes on her social media, cos this lady is bound to be big. And, we can't wait to see some guitar's get smashed up!
