Over the past year or so Popshade has interviewed artists from all corners of the pop sphere. From dream-pop, to electro-pop, to country pop and all inbetween. But, we still haven't forgot about what we really love. Pure, guilt-free pop music, that just makes you smile, and makes you want to sing along at the top of your lungs. This next artist I am going to introduce to you is one of those artists.
Paul Klein is an L.A based pop artist, with a great knack for writing a crazy catchy hook. I had a chat with Paul to talk about his latest single "Dance With Me" and other things he's been up to, so let's see what he had to say...
Hey Paul, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade! Why don't you tell us a bit about who you are, and what you do?
Thanks for the opportunity! I'm originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. After graduating from Oral Roberts University, I moved to Nashville, Tennessee to work on music and songwriting. During my 2 years there, I released 2 EP's and 2 christmas singles. I moved to Kansas City for a year, and now I find myself in Los Angeles. I've been here 8 days, but I'm loving it so far.
So, how would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
My sound has changed quite a bit over the years. Recently, I've been focusing most of my creative efforts on writing pop songs/songs that make you feel really good and that you walk away singing. In the past, I've written songs that are maybe more on the "sad" side of things. Also, if I'm going to be honest, the instrumentation on my previous tunes has lacked an overall sense of energy. I'm really trying to break out of that.
I've always been strong with melody, and I think pop music obviously plays heavily into that strength. I'm teaching myself not to over-think with lyrics, though. I'm learning that - in pop music - it's not just what you say, but how you say it. I've also been incorporating a lot more synth and drum samples into my music which is providing a tremendous amount of "life" and energy. I'm really excited about this new direction!
What made you want to be a musician?
My mom put me in piano lessons when I was 5 years old. I was classically trained for 13 years, and I started studying jazz/improvisation in the 8th grade. I didn't really get passionate about music until I started writing my own songs, though. Up until that point, music was just an extracurricular activity.
We love the new single "Dance With Me", it, well, it makes us want to dance! But what does the song mean to you?
"Dance With Me" is indicative of where I'm taking my music. It was really exciting for me to release it! I think it's quite different than anything I have ever done, and I was eager to read the response of those who listen to my songs. Overall, I think everyone is pretty into it!
What artists out there inspire you, and how have they affected your sound?
Michael Jackson has been a pretty huge influence in my life. The first pop song I can remember hearing was "Will You Be There." That song moved me. It still moves me. Other than the king of pop, the 1975 has won me over completely. I feel like they're doing things in music that no one else is doing, and that's every musician's dream/goal.
What can we expect in the future from you?
You can expect a lot of singles. Right now, as an unknown, independent artist, releasing an EP or record doesn't make sense. You drop 5 - 10 songs on the general public, and then no one hears from you for a year and a half. I'd rather release a single every month or two and stay on the radar. Content - and the frequency of it - is king.
And finally, where can people find you?
I just got to LA, but I'm hoping to book a few shows in the area very soon. You can find me on Twitter and Instagram [@pauljasonklein] and Facebook. You can also visit my website at www.pauljasonklein.com.
I'd like to thank Paul for taking the time to answer these questions!
Well there you have it. A crazy talented artist, who just happens to be incredibly humble and also have a passion for his industry. I personally love Paul's new single "Dance With Me", and if you are like me, and hope that Paul succeeds in fulfilling his dream, then go and support him and buy his "Dance With Me" on iTunes now!
