You ever hear a song and you're drawn in from the first bar? That's exactly what happened when we heard Mel Jade's Bliss for the first time. That was a good few weeks ago, and we've been hooked in ever since.
Mel makes ridiculously catchy pop tunes, pairs them with some stunning visuals that make us feel all warm and happy inside, and then tops it all off with a sprinkle of utter style. You'll need to check out the vid below to get what we mean...
Hey Mel, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade. Why don't you start by telling us a bit about who you are and what you do?
Hey Popshade! Sure, my name is Mel Jade, my favourite colour is pale gold, my favourite animal is the seahorse, my favourite number is 17. I'll probably have all new favourite things tomorrow. I also write and sing songs.
Sum your music up in three words?
Lemonade, mermaid, suburbia.
We absolutely ADORE Bliss! We've been singing it horribly off key around Popshade HQ for weeks now. What does the song mean to you?
I'm so happy you like it! The song is about that blissful feeling you get when you're around someone you really like, whether you have a crush on them or are already madly in love. To me that feeling is an adrenaline rush and a floaty high at the same time so I wanted the music to reflect that as well as just the lyrics. That's why there are these crazy bass and hectic drum parts then it drops into a sugary sweet 90s pop chorus.
The video for Bliss is fire too! Was it fun to make?
It was so fun! I flew to Adelaide to shoot it with YBY who are really cool and pro. It's set in a gritty motel where everything is kind of suburban and ordinary but then there are these surreal elements which represent how love can turn normal life into something breathtaking.
I had to jump into an unheated motel pool in the middle of winter for one of those surreal elements so that was really breathtaking...in a cold way haha.
You're clearly a very fashionable lady. Who are your biggest style icons?
Naw thanks. I'm lucky because one of my best friends, Ricky, is an amazing stylist so he gets me the coolest clothes to wear. He's my style icon as well as all of the street style fashion bloggers around the world. Tokyo, New York, London, Paris, everywhere. I'm also inspired by fashion editors and old fashion books.
If our readers popped down to a Mel Jade live show, what could they expect?
Maybe some of the glitter cannons that I bought off eBay, balloons, lights, my projector. I like things to be very visual. I'm inspired by stadium shows so I just do those but without the stadium and way more DIY haha. It's fun, come down!
And if you had the choice of only ever recording music, or playing live, which would you choose?
This is hard! The writing and creating and recording was always my favourite part but that's because I used to get stage fright. I would feel so sick before every show! Now I love performing live too because you get to just be in that moment and party with whoever is there to see you. If I get to tour the whole world one day and meet all the people who I've been hanging with on social media then performing live will be my favourite for sure.
2015's already off to a wicked start for you. What can we expect from the next 11 months?
A NEW ALBUM CALLED DREAMSICK! I'M SO EXCITED!
Fashion v Music - You can spend a week partying with Kate Moss or Madonna. Who do you choose?
I have to choose Madonna! They're both iconic and Kate Moss is one of my major inspirations, but Madonna is bae haha.
We're a pop site, so who's your favourite pop artist of all time?
Oh I'm such a music fan. Choosing just one should be illegal. Kylie Minogue's Impossible Princess album was so good. Gwen Stefani, Marina and the Diamonds, Debbie Harry from Blondie. I'll always have a special place in my heart for all the 2000s pop stars too, Britney and Christina!
And what's one pop song you are LOVING right now?
I still can't get over Lana Del Rey's old unreleased demos on YouTube. Some of them are very pop influenced too. She's a great writer. Everyone should look up Serial Killer, Smartie, Teenage Wasteland, You Can Be The Boss, Little Girls, Trash, Never Let Me Go... Okay just look up all of them.
Finally, where can peeps find you?
Internet me! Here are all the links. I post my upcoming live shows on my website and social media too. See you there!
We'd like to thank Mel for taking the time to answer these questions.
How ridiculously awesome is Bliss? And pretty much everything else Mel has put out? We're entranced by her mix of pop and fashion, and we reckon the rest of the world deserves to know about this too.
The new album is on its way later this year, but until that date, make sure you pick up Bliss on iTunes HERE, and go and follow MJ on all those lovely links above. You won't regret it!
