Guitars and pop music can often be a bit of a tricky combination, and often quite a controversial one too. You tend to very much have your pop folk, and your rock folk, and to a lot of people the phrase "pop-rock" doesn't have the best reputation.
Well, these fellas I'm about to introduce to you change all that. They go by the name of My Forever, and they bring everything you could want from a rock band, the big riffs, the musicianship, and the rockstar stylings; but then they mix it with everything we love about pop music, the huge catchy choruses, the knack for one heck of a sweet melody, and that feel good factor too. The boys were kind enough to answer a few questions for us so we could get to know them and their music a little better...
Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade, why don't you start by telling us a bit about who you are and what you do?
Dave: We are My Forever, a three piece anthemic rock band from, Thirsk North Yorkshire, England. I'm Dave, vocalist and guitarist. We have Matt, bass player / keys / backing vocals and we have Ben on drums.
First things first, you guys are masters of a catchy hook; is it important to you for your songs to be catchy?
Dave: Firstly, thank you. Absolutely. You need people to be able to hum or sing the melody within the first play of your record. It needs to be instantly addictive and infectious. Almost so much so, that they can't help but sing it. That's when you know you're onto a winner. Something they can remember instantly. I love it when I hear a new record for the first time and I'm already singing the melody by the last chorus. We want that same reaction with our music.
Matt: Very much so, a song can be memorable from catchy lyrics or melody and these are what people love when listening to music, how many times do you see people whistling or humming a tune to a song walking down the street.
Ben: It is essential that people remember your track the first time they hear it.
What can we expect from this upcoming EP?
Dave: My Forever on steroids. Haha! No, but seriously, this new EP is a huge leap for us. We've pushed the boundaries with all of it and worked in a completely new way. Just for me personally, I took myself completely outside of my comfort zone and tried to not do the same old techniques / tricks. Instead every-time I felt I was drifting back into that I'd say "no let's try it this way" and be daring and do something completely different and it's really taken us somewhere that we never could have imagined. I don't think people will be able to predict how it'll sound and I certainly don't think they'll expect it. I mean that in the most positive way though. It's by far our best record to date. I'm so excited about it. It's still My Forever, but with so much more.
Matt: It’s My Forever as previously known, but, with a slightly rockier edge to the music.
Ben: We say this every time but it’s always the case, the new EP is what everyone already knows us for but bigger and better.
Any particular track you really love?
Matt: Not gonna give the title away just yet but our first single from the EP is my personal favourite....
Dave: Yeah, the debut single from the record. That song is very personal to me and very honest. Probably the most honest song I've ever written.
Ben: For me I really enjoy playing 'No Matter What' live. This is one of our latest tracks, it’s got a great upbeat summer vibe to it and gets everyone going!
What artists out there would you love to collaborate with?
Matt: Due to the way I am inspired by and idolize him, Alejandro Manzano from Boyce Avenue I would absolutely love, he has always been an inspiration to me in terms of song writing and talent. To work with him would be an honour.
Ben: Tough question, it’s very easy to say a band like 30 Seconds To Mars purely because they are one of my favourite bands, but when it comes to collaborating, it’s great to think of something a bit different. I loved how Coldplay and Avicii teamed up on Coldplay's single 'A Sky Full Of Stars', it would be great to do something like that.
Dave: There's a few but, John Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls for me. Always been a massive inspiration to me and my writing. I've really gotten into Lauren Aquilina recently too, love her writing and such an incredible vocal. Would love to write with her sometime. Would love to work with Joy Williams / John Paul White from the Civil Wars. Their sense of harmony blows my mind. I'd just love to work with anyone who I can learn from and help better myself. I strive to always be better. It's very important to me.
What can people expect from one of your live shows?
Matt: A set full of surprises including added song introductions and performance ideas (without giving to much away)
Dave: A full blown, wild, huge, epic show that they will never forget. It's all about the fans for us. When people come to our shows we are there to make sure they have the time of their life, a moment / a day / an evening they will never forget. So we put absolutely everything into our performance and shows. We try to meet and greet as many fans as possible at every show too. We love meeting them.
Ben: Our shows are always full of energy. We love getting the crowd involved. It’s just all about having a great time!
What's the dream?
Dave: To connect with people around the world. To change people’s lives with our music. To travel and tour the world. To see / meet these people. Most of all, to make people smile and to inspire them.
Matt: Quite Simply, to share music with the world.
Ben: It would be great to do a world tour. Would give us the opportunity to visit places we've never been to and allow people all over the world to hear our music and to experience our live show.
After the EP, what's next?
Dave: We have many exciting plans & many exciting things coming for the fans. Touring and huge promotion to support the EP. We want to try see as many of the #MF Family as possible. We'd love to come visit some of our international fans too. Hopefully in 2015.
Ben: Lots of promo and gigging! When we release the EP we want as many people as possible to hear it and that means getting into the radio stations and touring.
What other pop artists out there are you loving at the minute?
Matt: 5 Seconds of Summer! The deluxe version of the album is on repeat always!
Dave: Dan & Shay. I cannot stop listening to these guys. They are incredible. Such great songs / amazing vocals / harmonies / lyrics. Just all round great!
Ben: There's too much choice! Currently really into You Me At Six, 30 Seconds To Mars, Coldplay, The Script, the list carries on. I listen to all sorts, its great discovering new bands/artists. It’s very important to keep up to date with what's out there at the minute as when writing our own tracks it essential the music is current but at the same time it’s also important to be different.
Finally, where can people find more of you?
Dave: We're on all social networking sites so add us/like us/join us and all that kinda thing We’ve got a very special EP launch party being planned at the moment so urging everyone to keep an eye out for that date and come down and have a party with us!!!
We'd like to thank the band for taking the time to answer these questions!
