If there's one thing that I hoped to achieve when I first started Popshade, it was to shine a light on artists who are just starting their career. Artists, that without promotion from me & the millions of other music blogs out there, wouldn't get noticed.
I have one of those artists today. Her name is Kelly Pepper and she makes dance music with soaring pop vocals, or pop music with groovy dance beats. Depending which way you look at it. Either way, she has an incredible voice and I was blown away by her new single. I had a chat with Kelly so that you guys can get to know her a bit better. So, here we go!
Hey Kelly, could you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
I am a singer/ songwriter from South East London. Been singing since the age of 5, songwriting since 13, seriously in the music industry for the last 2 or 3 years... I do a dark dance/ dub-step thing and I have my debut single Live The Day coming out on the 10th March!
How would you describe your sound?
My music is a mix of a lot of genres. It's quite dub-step influenced, but still quite commercial. Powerful lyrics with a lot of meaning. And i've been influenced by trance a lot, so there's a bit of that in there too. Big vocals, i'm not a soft sweet singer at all haha.
Who would you compare yourself to in the industry right now?
I like to think that what i'm doing is quite original. I think the people that do dance music, don't usually show off their voices much. And then the people that do show off their voices, tend to do more ballads. So because i do dance music and am a bit of a belter too, hopefully i'm creating something unique... If anything my music is a cross between Chase N Status and old school Black Box- Ride On Time.
So, what can people expect if they come down to one of your shows?
I've always performed to backing tracks so i'm really excited to say i'm now performing with a band! Woo! So myself and my new band, lots of jumping around and dancing and big vocals, coz that's my thing.
What's your favourite song you have written?
Wow, that's really difficult. They all have such different meanings and i can relate to all of them. I think my favourite is actually my single, because i wrote the whole melody and lyrics myself, there was no co-writer. And the song is really personal to me, because i can be a bit of a worrier sometimes and i analyse things a lot so it's like a reminder to myself not to worry, life is short and be positive.
And finally where can your fans (or new fans) find you?
My main website is http://www.kellypepper.co.uk, all my gig dates are on there. And i've also just started doing a blog on fashion and music and everything British at http://www.pepperedblog.co.uk oh and @KellyPepper
I'd like to thank Kelly for taking the time to answer these questions!
I love Kelly's voice, plain and simple. She has great power & control and I cannot wait to see what she can come up with for an album! I genuinely think there are big things in store for Kelly, so, keep your eyes on her!
