Sometimes a culmination of influences can turn into something very beautiful, or something a bit rubbish. This next lady we're about to introduce to you takes a lot of influence from the 50's/60's, adds in a sprinkling of Tim Burton, and then finishes it all off with a touch of contemporary pop. Oh, and she definitely does the former, as in, it's very beautiful.
Kelsy Karter is her name, and she makes a kind of soul-pop that's had us swooning for the past few weeks. The lovely lady was kind enough to answer some questions for us, so let's get to it...
Hey Kelsy, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade. Why don't you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
How do you do? I am Kelsy Karter - musician, rebel, professional weirdo.
How would you describe your music to those unfamiliar?
I call it blue-eyed soul. But don't be fooled, my eyes are green. ;) I have developed a sound of my own combining soul, motown and rocknroll into my own little mix of musical wonder :)
You've got your new album "Kiss The Boys" coming out rather soon (which we can't bloody wait for btw!), what can we expect from the album?
The record is a wicked combination of the styles I listed above. Motown gospel to rocknroll lullaby. It's storytelling, strange but wonderful lyrics and narratives.
We guess the name gives a bit away, but what's the story behind the album. Any major influences/ things that made a narrative?
Each song has its own influences and story, but ultimately they're all stemmed from an experience in my life. Boys, running away from home, being an outsider, being in love, being insane, etc... I am "inspired" by some pretty odd things too. Other than music, and life, I draw vision from the circus, and other peoples stories. Bold people, strange people, rebellious people -Johnny Depp, Joaquin Phoenix and Angelina Jolie are "rebels" that I relate to and am often roused by. As well as my family. They are an extraordinarily beautiful circus of their own.
You've had some pretty sick visuals go along with your songs/covers on your YT. Are visuals just as important to you?
Oh you know it. I'm doing a video for every song in this record. I grew up in the theatre, acting, so the visuals to me are not only vital, but a chance for that part of me to create and explore. Youtube has been a great outlet for me to post random shit for the fans and for my own impatience while making the album haha! I will be co-directing a few of the videos too.
Who's your biggest style icon?
James Dean, Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart, Harry Styles, Madonna, and the CIRCUS!!!!
You're in control of the worlds biggest music festival. You're allowed five of your favourite performers, alive or dead, to headline the gig, and you get to perform with all of them. Who's on the bill?
Amy Winehouse, John Newman, Bruno Mars, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, David Bowie, Taylor Swift (Sorry it's more the 5 haha, and a strange combo)
Would you rather only be able to record in the studio, or perform live?
LIVE! That's the best part!!! Studio is awesome too. But performing, that's living. I am in love with chaos, and the stage is the best place to break rules.
Speaking of live shows, what can we expect if we pop down to one of yours?
Well my band, the Rebel Wonders, for one. They're f*!cking talented dudes. I'll most likely rock up in a leather jacket and top hat. Plus you'll always get heart, pain, humor, awkward talking, tears, music!!
We're a pop site, so who is your fav pop artist of all time?
That's too hard. I love boybands.
And what's one pop track you cannot get enough of right now?
Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk and Taylor Swift - Blank Space
Finally, where can peeps find you?
I will be performing in New York City at The Bitter End on February 27th! And follow me to keep updated on more shows coming up....
We'd like to thank Kelsy for taking the time to answer these questions.
We're sure after that, you're just as excited for Kiss The Boys as us. And if you're not... get out!'
Just kidding! We know you lot love great music, so we have no doubt you're in love with Kelsy's voice like us. Whilst we wait in anticipation for the album and those videos, follow the lovely lady on those links she gave you just above. and prepare for KK world domination!
