Today I'm going to introduce to you an artist who I have personally followed for a few years now. I think it says something about the state of the music industry when acts like Johnny Stimson, are only just getting attention now after years of hard work.
Johnny Stimson is a pop musician with a sound rather hard to describe. A bit of funk, a bit of pop, a bit of awesome. I'm gonna let Johnny take it from here, cause I'm just making myself look like an idiot. So, here we go...
Hey Johnny, could you us a bit about who you are and what you do?
Well, my name is Johnny Stimson and I play music. I live, eat, and breathe music too. I snack on music and I take my music on four walks a day. I also just released my new single, "HUMAN MAN."
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as funky pop sunshine dance. I might liken it to the feeling you get when walking around in a public place right after you get an excellent haircut.
Who would you compare yourself to in the industry right now?
I am a huge fan of Breakbot, Daft Punk, JT, Haim, and C2C among others. I don't know if I could possibly compare myself to any of those, but they certainly inspire.
So, what can people expect if they come down to one of your shows?
People can expect to get back to their cars in the parking lot smiling and toe tapping. It's extremely important to me that when people listen to me perform, they feel good. Lots of dancing happens. The band has some heavy hip hop and funk influences. We get down.
We love your new single "Human Man", but what does it mean to you?
Thank you so much! I'm glad you do. To me, HUMAN MAN is all about being human, man. I wrote it to try to point out some of the joys of just being alive and particularly, being present. Sometimes we get caught up in the rote mechanical repetition of technology in our daily lives and forget that the sun is still shining, people are still falling in love, and kids are finding caterpillars in the yard--I mean those are things we remember!
You're starting to get some big attention from sites such as PopJustice etc. but when will you know that you have made it?
Well thank you! To me it's already there. I am happiest when I'm playing and singing for other people. The fact that I get to do that daily, to me, means that I have arrived. They can't find me. I tend to wear stripey red and white shirts with a little red beanie and blend into crowds for fun. Just kidding, I'll be playing in my Dallas, TX on June 28th at the House of Blues. Also, here are some virtual locations you can pinpoint me:
I'd like to thank Johnny for taking the time to answer these questions!
Well, there you have it. I never would have come up with "funky pop sunshine dance".
Certainly some of the more interesting answers we have had here at Popshade, but very entertaining nonetheless. Johnny seems like a lovely lad, and he makes great music too. I've followed him since his album "All That I See" which is an absolutely cracking album that you should check out now!
