Christmas Note: It's Christmas day, and you're reading Popshade. For that I am very grateful. Popshade has been an incredible experience over this past year, and it's thanks to you brilliant people! Anyways, enjoy our interview with this brilliant man below, this message will magically disappear tomorrow!
I spend a lot of my spare time helping local musicians out in my hometown of Nottingham in plenty of ways. I work for Nusic to help artists get their first piece of content together and get their foot in the ladder at the start of their career. I'm pointing that out at the start of this article, as I don't want anyone saying that this next fella simply got on the site because we are mates, oh no.
Josh Kemp is one of the most talented individuals I have ever come across in the music industry, and that is why he is on Popshade. Josh makes clever acoustic numbers with catchy hooks and some great lyrics. He's often referred to in my hometown as "the nicest and hardest working man in the music industry", from this interview, you're about to see why...
Hey Josh, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade! Why don't you start by telling people a bit a bit about who you are and what you do?
Hey mate, so i'm a singer songwriter from Nottingham. I've always had a massive passion for music of all kinds starting with piano when i was 4 and since then have written all sorts of things from film music and musicals, to boy band songs and club tracks!
So, let's assume some readers haven't heard of you yet. Describe your sound?
I use an acoustic guitar and a loop pedal, and basically just mess about, layering up guitar and vocal parts! I'm massively influenced by guys like Jason Myraz and Two Door Cinema Club! I'd say that my style is Acoustic Pop but i try and incorporate different genres in each song depending on what the songs about!
It's Christmas time! Doing anything special?
Throughout the year a spend a lot of time away travelling, so over Christmas i love to just eat and drink copious amounts with family and friends, it's easily my favourite time of year so i wrote a song about the important things to me on my favourite time of year, it's called Coming Home To You.
We bloody love the "Sofa Surfin'" EP man! But what's your favourite track off the EP and why?
Thanks mate! Thats a tough one - all the songs were written while touring and all represent a different parts of it :) My favourite song to perform live is The Reason, but i definitely love the reaction that The Hangover Song gets!
You've done bloody loads of gigs! But, have you got any interesting stories to tell?
Plenty! About two months ago i was gigging in Manchester and i was sharing the stage with a guy beat boxing with a didgeridoo and a guy dressed as Jack Sparrows nephew singing pirate tales! I also met a guy in Stockwell in outh London who introduced himself as Carlos - King of the Jews... Sometimes i just don't know what to say...
How does it feel to be constantly referred to as "The nicest and hardest-working man in the music industry"?
To be fair, its really nice to hear! but then again i'm gigging almost every night doing what i love so i have nothing to be grumpy about! :)
What can people expect if they come and catch you at one of your many gigs?
Confusion to start with sometimes :P, when people have never seen a loop pedal before, the look on their face's when the guitar is still playing but i'm grabbing a drink is absolutely priceless! Though I put everything into my live shows, live music is easily my favourite thing in life and that's why i gig so much! So come down to the next local gig and say hello :D
Finally, anything else you want to tell us/our readers?
Keep an eye on my page over the next few months for new sessions and new single releases! There's so much in the pipeline for 2014 and would be my pleasure to share it with you!
