We're more fans of the in your face uplifting pop here at Popshade, so it takes a lot for a darker pop artist to impress us. This next lady we're about to introduce to you did just that, and now we won't shut up about her!
Ella On The Run makes dark brooding pop that's as sensitive as it is sexy. War Of Words is her new single, and the second we heard it, we knew we had to ask this dark pop princess a few questions...
Hey Ella, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade. Why don't you tell us a little about who you are and what you do?
Hi, I am Ella On The Run, a London based alt-pop singer/songwriter and my new EP War of Words will be coming out on the 24th of November. I also make a mean triple layer chocolate cake!
We bloody love War Of Words! It's making us groove all over the place here at Popshade HQ, and we can defo feel some Robyn vibes! What does the song mean to you?
I love Robyn so any comparison to her is a huge compliment, thank you! Like some of Robyn's songs, War of Words is very feisty and so I love performing it! It definitely draws on personal experiences about arguments I may have had with a girlfriend or a boyfriend that just got out of hand. I think a lot of people can relate to that kind of situation. I also really love the juxtaposition between the dark lyrics and the upbeat vibe and chords, it helps emphasise a passive aggressive attitude. To me, it is definitely one of the best songs I have written so far and I am really proud of the final outcome.
What can people expect from the rest of the EP?
The full EP will consist of War of Words, two additional original songs and an electronic remix of War of Words. The original songs are rather minimal in production and decidedly slower and darker in rhythm and mood. For the War of Words remix, I had the chance to get Bluedot (Howard from Qtier, one half of the electronic soul duo signed to Bad Life) to go wild with it, and I love the end result! It's a completely different genre to mine but hey, thats why it's called a remix!
You've been gigging loads this year, but for those who haven't seen you, what can they expect from your live shows?
Energy! I love being on stage and I hope that my enthusiasm pulls people in! Along side the live instruments we use backing loops and tracks and the bass lines are almost always played on a moog, to maintain the electronic feel.
Can we expect a debut album anytime soon?
Yes!! Hopefully next year! I have just started thinking about the whole logistics and playing around with new ideas. Obviously I would love to keep working with Matt and Lukasz, the producers of all my tracks so far, but I would also like to work with other London based producers to get some new input. So that is what I am looking for right now.
If you could collaborate with anyone out there in the industry, who would it be?
Well now that you mentioned Robyn...
We're a pop site, so straight up, who is your favourite pop artist of all time?
Pop would not be pop without MJ. I have to say that! I do love me some old school Madonna and Whitney though, and I have huge respect for Gaga and Taylor Swift.
And, we know this may be hard, one pop song that you just can't get enough of right now?
Lorde's new single Yellow Flicker Beat... it's brilliant.
Do you enjoy recording in the studio or playing live shows more?
Hmmm...studio sessions are exhausting but so rewarding in the end. Live shows are so much fun yet so exhausting at the same time... Do I have to choose??
And, off the back of that, if you were told you could only have one of these, which would you choose? - You can only create your own music, or you can only listen to other artist's music?
I would have to go with creating music, although it would probably be very abstract without being influenced by any other artists and the current time!
Finally, where can peeps find you?
I will be opening for Norwegian pop beauty Dagny at the Old Queens Head on the 19th of November so definitely come by if you can! You can get tickets and more details about me at www.ellaontherun.com - You can also follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @ellaontherun, as well as get my music on Spotify, Soundcloud and iTunes.
We'd like to thank Ella for taking the time to answer these questions.
You may have gathered, but we really, really like Ella's new tune. From the production to the eerie, sexy vocal - it's a great pop tune. And this is just the start!
We cannot wait to hear the new tracks, and we reckon she may have one of THE releases of 2015 on her hands right here. Only time will tell, but while we wait for that album, get following all those social links above, and buy the bloody single iTunes!
