We've got something a bit different for you today. These fellas we're about to introduce to you aren't pure in your face pop like we normally cover, but they're a band that I came across that stunned us with their music so much, that we felt we had to share it with you.
DEMS are hard to describe but they make music that words like "epic" and "beautiful" were made for. As we're clearly rubbish at describing them, lets hand it over to David from the band...
Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade, why don't you tell those unfamiliar with you a bit about who you are and what you do?
We are a three piece from London - (David, Dan & Duncan). We have been making music together for a few years now and we're about to bring out our debut album Muscle Memory at the end of this year.
We don't quite know how to describe your music... it's electronicy, poppy, rnb... shizzle - how do you describe it?
Our sound is very much rooted in live instrumentation, it lies somewhere in the realm of electronica fused with RnB.
The new single, Never Have, Never Will is quite unlike anything we've ever heard. How did the track come about?
The Track came about after a practice session in our studio one day. We were playing with live sampling our vocal harmonies and they gave us the basis for the track. We then spent the rest of the day recording all sorts of ambient drum sounds and then the vocal top line was laid down finally, it was pretty much written in one evening.. which is much quicker than it normally takes us to create a track.
Where did the concept for the video come from?
The video concept came from us always trying to use what we have around us. One of my good friends is a Dancer with Rambert, a modern dance company and I've wanted to work with her for a long time because she's an incredible dancer. With her we wanted to describe a journey in the modern world so many people venture into but very few understand.
We're also gonna find it on the album, which is due out in October, what can people expect from that?
The album is coming out on the 3rd November. We have created the album over the past year, its a mixture of electronics, guitars, vocals, beats, bass. There are also a number of videos coming out alongside the album as we have always been very interested in creating beautiful pieces of art rather than just a collection of pieces of music.
You've done a fair few collaborations and remixes, but who out there would be your dream artist to work with?
Musically we'd love to work with Bjork, because she's got such a great mind for music.
Cinematically we'd love to work with Chris Cunningham as he is such a great filmmaker.
And from a live show point of view it would be great to work with United Visual Artists as they create wonderful live light shows.
What can people expect from one of your live shows?
Our live show is very important to us and the way we create music. We have worked to create every show to be different from the next, we often play with string groups, choirs and live visuals to create a really exciting spectacle and musical experience. On stage we use a lot of samplers and electronic sounds, with vocals and guitars soaring through the middle.
After the debut album drops, what next?
We have been working on a bunch of new material already actually. I think we are just so bursting with music we want to write we will just keep on writing and hopefully follow up with a second LP in 2015.
We are a pop website, so, who's your favourite pop artist of all time?
Prince. Straight up.
Finally, where can peeps find you, both physically and virtually?
Physically we are based in Balham so if you're creepy you can find us on the streets of south London. Otherwise we will be playing a release show this coming November that should be really special. The location is still secret, but it will be somewhere between an art exhibition and a live show, (a fully immersive experience).
Digitally people can find us at www.d-e-m-s.com and then all the other normal places.
We'd like to thank the band for taking the time to talk to us!
Well, there you have it. Hopefully you'll get what we meant from our opening paragraphs by having a listen to their stuff. There's some truly beautiful harmonies going off, and we can't wait to catch this lot live. Make sure you peep the new video and pre-order the new album HERE.
