Spotify can be a beautiful thing can't it? What makes us say that? Well, its Discover function (which tries to reccomend you music you'll like, based on what you've been listening to) has been very good as of late. So good in fact, that it's introduced us to one of our favourite new artists.
Corey Harper is his name, and he's one of the coolest cats we've ever met. An Oregon based, sufer dude, with some beautiful songs. Oh, and he's bezzie mates with the pop megastar that is Cody Simpson. We fell in love with Reeling thanks to Spotify, so we just had to throw some questions to the man himself. He kindly caught them and answered them...
Note: We didn't actually throw anything at Corey, that wouldn't be very nice...
Hey Corey, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade, why don’t you startby telling us a bit about who you are and what you do?
Sure thing! My name is Corey Harper! I am from Portland, Oregon and I sing and write songs on my guitar. I live in Venice California and am currently writing music and working on an EP I hope to have out in November! I love to surf, take pictures, go on long drives, and eat at In N Out! I'm also a professional meme maker haha (I'd like to think)
How would you describe your music to those unfamiliar?
I would describe my music as a window into my life as a singer/songwriter/average twenty year old haha. the music I've been creating recently has really shadowed some of my influences, lyrically and physically. So a lot of soft acoustic songs I've written throughout the many years of learning how to write music. but I'm finding my own sound.
We fell in love with your music after hearing “Reeling”, how did that song come about?
Haha, well I guess it comes from just being a teenager that's experienced heartbreak and conflict with girls. Instead of moving on, trying to reset super fast or counter attack, I just let the feelings take over and it helps me write songs that are relatable. That's what's most important to me. Having songs people can heal from.
What’s next in the world of CH? An EP? World domination?
Ahh yes! I'm currently still writing and recording for my EP I'm planning to release in November of this year! If the music allows haha.
Speaking of world domination, what can peeps expect if they come down to one of your live shows?
Hmm.. I love to create a genuine vibe and connect with the people who attend ie: probably talking about what I ate that day or the latest FuckJerry post. but I play all kinds of music, and usually have a few covers I've learned that week thrown into it. I forget a bunch my lyrics too so sometimes I just make up lyrics that may or may not make sense but I guess that's part of the experience haha. I also make it a point to talk to most of the people I don't know who came out to thank them and get a chance to hear feedback. It's very encouraging for me and I love people!
We are a pop site, so we have to ask – who is your favourite popstar of all time?
Cody Simpson but don't tell him hahaha.
And what’s one pop song you are loving right now?
Walk The Moon - Shut Up and Dance. That song rips so hard!!
Super broad, but super important question – who are your biggest influences?
Wow there's just so many to put down and I'll probably forget a bunch, but I'll give it a shot (no specific order)...
Fleetwood Mac, BB King, Buddy Guy, John Mayer, Bob Dylan, Neil young, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy, Clapton, Jake Bugg, switchfoot, Reliant K, Stevie Wonder, Allen Stone, Noah Gunderson, Matt Kearney, Jack White, David Ryan Harris, Matt Wright, The Shins, The Police haha and many more.
What’s your favourite thing about being a musician?
Oh man, another huge Q but I'd have to say the best thing is being able to make music for people and have the product be something of your very own that people can hear and use to heal and be stoked on. My favorite thing in the world is when people tell me how my music has influenced them in a positive way. I want to give the world the same feeling I get from listening to one of my favorite songs at the time! It's the best feeling!
And finally, where can peeps find you?
I'll be going on tour with Cody Simpson from September 16th to October 24th. Then working on some solo shows snd maybe a west coast tour this winter! Other than than lots of shows around LA coming soon! Or out in Malibu surfing haha .
We'd like to thank Corey for taking the time to answer these questions!
BOOM! How lovely is this man? Super humble, and with some truly stunning music too. Considering he's off on tour with Mr Simpson, we reckon it's only a matter of time before he makes it big himself - so quick - get to an intimate show whilst you still can. We doubt there'll be tickets left for them for long!
