To many people, Motown was the peak of pop music. It was ridiculously popular, churning out hit and after hit and never dropping in quality. Unfortunately, nowadays there aren't many artists following in the footsteps of Motown. However, this next act I am about to introduce to you creates music so authentically Motown, you'll think it's the sixties again.
They go by the name of Cherry Boop and The Sound Makers, and they are the definition of a hidden gem in the music industry. I came across their most recent release "I Want To Give You My Everything", and genuinely thought I had ended up on a Motown bootleg. I investigated, found out more about them, and just knew that I needed to introduce you guys to them. Cherry was kind enough to have a chat with me and answer some questions, so lets see what she had to say...
Hey Cherry, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade! Why don't you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
Hi, Well I'm very pleased to meet you, especially in the UK, cause I released my first single thanks to "Outta Sight Records"- London in March 2013! My name is Cherry Boop, and I'm a kind of "Blue eyed girl", cause I'm singing Soul Music, and I'm white. I was a dancer before I started to sing, and I lived a bit all around the world thanks to this job of course!
I started to record my album 2 years ago, cause I'm writing lyrics and it's a long journey to start this kind of adventure. Of course, you know when you start it, but you never know when you finish it.. That's who I am, a mix of Soul music and dance.
You clearly have a beautiful retro sound within the band, but who influenced it?
I love Soul music, and I've listened to those songs for a long time, from Brenda Holloway to Dusty Springfield, Donny Hathaway, Otis Redding and many artists from Stax or Motown. This is my culture and I hope that my album will help some people to go back to this style of music and feel dance vibrations from this creative period...
You remind us of a time when we were excited to listen to the music charts, what do you love about the Motown era?
Well, in a way, Motown made a dream come true. Each band, or each lyrics meant something to somebody plus lovely melodies, With a strong dynamic that made you feel in love, or sad, or ready to dance. It's all about life's feelings, that's why Motown era was a part of daily life for everybody at that time! I wish it could be true today.
Who would be your dream collaboration?
There are many great bands, or Sound engineers who are working with a lots of respect for real sound, and real Soul in their music, I think that it's really a good thing that this way of work is coming back in the studios all over the world. I wish I could work with someone like Tommy "TNT" Brenneck, or Gabriel Roth. But anyone that is involved in this process, with this kind of sound's culture is someone I can learn from!
We love the single "I Want To Give You My Everything", but what does it mean to you?
Mainly it's the story of my meeting with Bobby Eli and William Hart from "The Delfonics", that made my dream come true. They accepted to collaborate and produce this single and it was so easy, they were so nice to me. I couldn't expect more when I was listening to this beautiful song for the first time with J.Barrientos who made me discover this amazing Northern Soul track. To me, this song is a meeting story.
What can we expect from you guys over the next year or so?
We're gonna release this album "The Way I Am", the Single "I Want To Give You My Everything" is the only cover, the other tracks are originals songs, composed by Woody Boy, and I wrote the Lyrics. It's the main thing for next year, and we'll be on Tour from April 2014 with "The Delfonics" and Bobby Eli from Philadelphia in May 2014. So stay tuned on Facebook, or on www.cherryboopandthesoundmakers.com to have all the information.
You already come from a beautiful country (France), but is there anywhere that you would love to visit on a tour?
I've been so many places in my life. I'm speaking like Donny Hathaway! But it's true, so I'd love to go to places that love and respect Soul Music just like Nottingham!
Finally, what can people expect if they come down to one of your shows?
They can expect to share a Soul Music moment, with energy, emotional moments, good musicians, good retro sound, and to spend an hour in my universe which talks about human feelings, and an idea of living together with all our differences but music can gather us only as human being... Enjoy it! And many thanks for this interview!
I'd like to thank Cherry for taking the time to answer thee questions!
Well, there you have it. I'm sure you'll agree that the music Cherry and the band makes is ridiculously on point to their favourite era. It's nice to think back to a time when music meant so much to people, and there was so much passion behind it. Passion which Cherry and the band clearly have.
I want them to succeed, as I truly believe they deserve it! So, help them out. Go do all the social networking stuff found above, and go and buy their latest single on iTunes! You won't regret it!
